The Seminar was held at the Lloyds Maritime Academy in London from 27th -28th January 2011. The emphasis of the seminar was on communications, monitoring and reporting, from the users’ point of view.

The Seminar was chaired by Peter Blackhurst, Head of Maritime Safety, INMARSAT, who gave an opening address followed by a presentation entitled ‘Assessing LRIT and evaluating its commercial potential’.

The next two presentations were from commercial providers of LRIT (Long Range Identification and Tracking) services, on the analysis of the data and its use in improving fleet management.

An Update on e-Navigation was given on behalf of IALA. This provided the background to the initiative and the developments necessary for its successful implementation, particularly resilient PNT. The benefits to be expected from e-Navigation were set out, especially for vessel tracking and monitoring. Most of the questions were about eLoran, asking for more information and the attitude was generally supportive.

Barry Goldman, VTS Manager for the PLA then presented a Case Study of the Data Requirements for the Port of London.

The first day ended with a discussion on integrating AIS, LRIT, e-Navigation and satellite AIS. Several speakers made the point that LRIT was mainly for the benefit of maritime administrations and ship-owners were reluctant to contribute to its costs.

The second day was mainly taken up with presentations on AIS via satellite, from providers (ORBCOMM, ExactEarth, Kongsberg) and companies involved in collecting and processing the data.

Applications include combating piracy, profiling vessel risk and improving maritime domain awareness. Jon Leon Ervik from the Norwegian Coastal Administration showed how satellite AIS could be used to track polluting vessels and other suspicious activities.
