GLA R&RNAV attended the IALA e-Navigation Committee Working Group 2 inter-sessional
meeting in Koblenz, in November 2010. The meeting was called to review the German
Waterways Administration’s Virtual Reference Station (VRS) solution for providing
differential GNSS corrections. The two day meeting also reviewed the work plan for the
group and identified critical dates and project for completion over the next few years.
The German Waterways Administration has implemented its first Virtual Reference Station
solution as part of the recapitalisation of their marine differential network. The VRS
approach has many advantages as it is capable of providing the mariner with differential
corrections in the RTCM v2.3 format, while also providing other users with corrections via
different broadcast methods.
