2010 - News - GPS jamming trials video now available online

04 June 2010

The GLA R&RNAV Directorate has undertaken studies to understand the effect of GPS jamming on safe navigation at sea. The video below is taken from GPS jamming trials conducted off Newcastle Upon Tyne between 30th November and 4th December 2009.

Excerpt from DVD:

“When the jamming signal swamped the true GPS signal we saw the failure of all GPS-fed onboard navigation systems."

"We saw hazardously misleading information, drifts and changes in the Galatea’s course and speed.......”

“Providing the eLoran service used for the demonstrations is now routine. eLoran’s reliable position, navigation, and timing information was maintained throughout the trial .....and gave accuracies of better than 9m.”

“ We successfully demonstrated the real danger of relying on satellite navigation systems alone for maritime navigation and the obvious safety benefits of using an independent complimentary and robust system such as eLoran”.
