The Visual Signalling section within R&RNAV undertakes various projects and provides engineering support throughout the year.
Engineering support includes the photometric and colorimetric measurement of aid-to-navigation lights.
Light performance is measured on one of our two light ranges.
The typical optical apparatus in a working lighthouse, however, is too large to remove to the laboratory. In this case, measurement equipment is set up some distance away from the lighthouse and beam profiles are measured 'in situ'.
