e-Navigation is the future, digital concept for the maritime sector and is required in response to expected changes. Ships are getting larger and faster, with greater congestion and reduced manning levels. This has all provided the impetus for this development.
There is a clear and compelling need to equip shipboard users and those ashore responsible for the safety of shipping with modern, proven tools that are optimized for good decision making.

Example: Largest Container Ship
- Maersk Emma launched 1st September 2006
- 397m long, 56m wide, >11000 containers, >25knots, 13 crew
The e-Navigation concept has the potential to deliver benefits to all stakeholders in the maritime environment; however, it is a complex system which will take many years to fully implement. It is currently being developed in IMO with support from its Member States and from other international organisations, in particular IHO and IALA, whose members are responsible for AtoNs and other shore-based infrastructure, including VTS.
